Neoexpressionism

Neo-expressionism is a direction of new painting, primarily in Germany, France and Italy from 1978, which makes individual stylistic elements of expressionism its own.

The multifaceted nature of the artistic approaches does not do justice to the term neo-expressionism. In addition to figuration or objectivity, a spontaneous, emotional expression, ironic, emphatic or aggressive gestures and aesthetic provocations should be regarded as characteristics.

Idols are the German Expressionists, but also the punk movement around 1978 and a conceptual counterpart to Minimal Art at Dokupil. Parallel art movements are the Figuration libre in France and the Transavanguardia in Italy. In the USA, David Salle and Julian Schnabel represent a comparable direction.
