Moon

An eclipse between the sun, moon and earth always occurs when three celestial bodies are in a line. However, this only happens on a full or new moon and when the moon is in one of the two lunar nodes. This only happens twice a year.

Lunar Eclipse

A lunar eclipse can only occur on a full moon. The earth is between the sun and the moon. The lunar eclipse lasts a maximum of 3 hours 40 minutes.

A distinction is made between the following types:

The total lunar eclipse. Here the moon moves completely into the shadow of the earth.

During the partial lunar eclipse, only part of the moon is shadowed by the earth, which means that part of the moon remains visible throughout the eclipse.

During the penumbral eclipse, the moon is completely or partially immersed in the penumbra of the earth. Since only a slight graying of the side of the moon that is closest to the umbra of the earth is shown, these penumbral eclipses are quite inconspicuous.
