Career:
Hans Holbein the Elder was a German painter of the Ranaissance and the senior of a famous family of painters. Holbein learned the craft of painting in Augsburg. In this city he finally kept his main residence until 1514/1517. His assignments take him to Ulm, Frankfurt am Main and Alsace. In 1517 he left the city of Augsburg due to his shattered financial situation. He settled in Isenheim in Alsace. He died there in what is now Colmar (France) in 1524.

The work of Hans Holbein includes altar and devotional paintings, portraits and glass paintings. The sketchbooks that have been preserved show him to be a first-class draughtsman.

Streets in several cities are named after Hans Holbein and his son. This includes e.g. the Holbeinstraße at the Frankfurt Städel and the Holbeinsteg, a bridge over the Main. He is also the namesake of many schools such as the Holbein Gymnasium in Augsburg and the Realschule in Frankfurt`s Sachsenhausen district.
