In the past, he was never seen as a breed, the breed was much more valued for function.

The Boerboel dog breed is said to date back to the time of Jan van Riebeck (1652), who was the first Dutch administrator of the Cape region. Settlers who came to the country at that time brought the largest and strongest dogs of their country of origin with them for their protection. In later times, the British contributed their mastiffs. It wasn't until the 1980's that the South African Breeding Association elevated these dogs to the status of a breed.
