Bardino

Origin and History

The Bardino, which is traditionally called Perro de Ganado Majorero in Fuerteventura, is a very old dog breed. The Bardino is a livestock herding dog on Fuerteventura, originally a goat herding dog.

Due to ignorance of the actual breed, "Bardino" has meanwhile become a "collective term" for the brindle dogs of the Canary Islands, for the sake of simplicity every dog is called "Bardino" or "Bardino-Mix" just because it is brindle.

Description

The Bardino dog breed is a medium-sized and robust looking breed.
The height at the withers (height at the shoulder) of the Bardino auténtico is between 55 and 63 cm with a weight of 25 to 45 kg. The standard size (shoulder height) of the Bardino has a tolerance range of 2 cm higher than stated here. The coat of this breed is smooth and short-haired, the coat color being deep black with light beige streaks fading into grey.

The Bardino is also known as the Verdino (verde = green) because of its greenish fur colour. Typical breed characteristics of the Bardino auténtico are the double pads on the hind legs with double claws, deep black coat color with light beige stripes, shorter tail.

beings

The "Bardino auténtico" (prototype of the Bardino, original form of the Bardino) is a rather calm, balanced and watchful dog. As a herding dog, he has little hunting instinct. He is usually open-minded and friendly towards other pets. Since the Bardino is not a beginner's dog, it needs consistent training like all other dogs. The original color of the Bardino is a light ground with dark brindle. They are called Bardino Majorrero, which is very, very rare.
