Origin and History

The historical roots are believed to lie in the village of Bangkaew, which is in the district of Knall Rakam District, Phitsanulok Province, in the central region of Thailand.

Legend has it that the third abbot of Wat Bangkaew Temple, the respected Luang Puh Maak Metharee, was known for compassion and concern and was kind to all living things. An old villager by the name of Tah Nim gave the abbot a large dog with a long black coat that was said to have been pregnant by a jackal. The puppies were longhaired and had black and dark brown fur. The abbot raised the four female puppies after birth.
Due to the special location of the village, they were mostly cut off from the rest of the world. A communal breed was formed through inbreeding through the river, as outside dogs could not contribute to the gene pool. Because the dogs quickly turned out to be very popular, the breed was quickly selectively bred.

Description

The Thai Bangkaew dog has a compact and square physique (shoulder height corresponds to length). The body size is between 43 and 53 cm at 17 to 21 kg, depending on the gender. The "double coat" coat consists of the short undercoat and longer top coats and comes in all shades of red, grey, brown and black in a wide variety of coat markings. The hair on the neck looks like a lion-like mane, which is more noticeable in males than in females.
The well-feathered tail is either pointed upwards like a saber or, depending on the situation, carried all the way over the back.
