Origin and History

The Bakharwal dog, a Molosser, is a livestock guardian dog in Pir Panjal mountain range in Kashmir. The pastoralists of the nomadic tribes bred it to protect their belongings and to guard the herds. The Bakharwal is said to be one of the oldest breeds in the Himalayas.

Description

The Kashmiri Sheepdog is deep-chested, muscular and agile. He has a straight back and deep shoulders. The body is long-legged with a powerful neck and large head. The coat of the breed is of medium length, with plenty of undercoat, in black and various shades of brown. Tricolor and piebald dogs also occur. Depending on the area, the size of the dog varies between 60 and 75 cm at the shoulder.
