The Old German Shepherd Dog has a different coat (long stick hair) than that of the German Shepherd Dog. However, this coat variant is not recognized by the VDH. On this occasion, various clubs and associations were founded throughout Germany.

In Germany, the Old German Shepherd Dog is represented in other breed clubs that hold large annual breed shows with international participation. In March 2005 it was discussed whether the "Old German", i.e. "long stick hair", should be allowed again and integrated as a variant of the German Shepherd Dog, but these were rejected by the SV and VDH.

Old German shepherd dogs in the sense of "old breeds of shepherd dogs from Germany" are now referred to as Old German shepherd dogs to avoid a naming conflict.

The appearance corresponds approximately to that of the German Shepherd Dog. it is similar in size and weight. The Old German Shepherd Dog reaches a height at the withers of up to 65 cm and can weigh up to 40 kg. Only the longer fur distinguishes the two breeds. He has the typical German Shepherd colors of black and brown, black and wolf gray.

The Old German Shepherd Dog is good-natured, alert, and child-friendly. It is good for sports. In some cases, it has a higher stimulation threshold than the German shepherd.

Like the German Shepherd Dog, it is used as a protection and companion dog.

Due to its long stick hair coat, which protects it considerably better from the cold and wet than the German Shepherd Dog, it is often used as an avalanche search dog, primarily in Austria.
