WAP

What is WAP?

WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol. It refers to a "cable-free", i.e. mobile type of transmission of applications. Applications in turn mean such possibilities as are already known from the Internet.
Against this background, WAP includes, for example, its own markup code similar to HTML. Just as HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language, the acronym WML means Wireless Markup Language. In fact, both markup languages are very similar. But they are not the same! For this reason, WAP pages cannot be read directly via conventional browsers.
Texts are created using WML, which can be called up from the display of a mobile phone via WAP. As on the Internet, the user needs a browser for this. Mobile phone providers have therefore had the WAR browser developed for viewing WAP pages.
In this way, the user of a mobile phone can obtain the required information at any time and from (almost) any location. WAP is far from making a stationary computer superfluous, but it does offer a suitable mini replacement for mobile users.
Due to the size of telephone screens, WAP pages have to be structured differently - otherwise you would have to scroll very far to view an entire Internet page. For this reason, so-called DECKs and CARDs are distinguished in the WML markup language. A deck roughly corresponds to an entire screen page. The deck is divided into cards. Cards each represent a section of the deck. The content can then be conveniently viewed on a small display.
As on the Internet, it is also possible to view graphics via WAP. However, only black and white graphics. WAP uses a new graphics format, WBMP (Wireless Bitmap). So far there are very few graphics programs that can create WBMPs.

What is WAP?
WAP enables Internet information to be transmitted to the displays of mobile devices, e.g. mobile phones. The word WAP is an abbreviation for Wireless Application Protocol.

Who is responsible for that?
Because interest in mobile communication has increased rapidly in recent years, manufacturers of mobile phones, among others, have joined the international WAP Forum merged (see www-WAPForum.org ). In addition to almost all international Telephone companies also belong to the WAP forum all well-known Manufacturer of mobile receivers (e.g. Alcatel, Ericsson, Bosch, Motorola, Mitsubishi, Nokia; Philips, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and many more). In the forum, a common technique was agreed to ensure reception.

Who implements WAP?
Three different groups of providers:
1. Via the Telephone companies the digital information is transmitted.
2. The Mobile Device Manufacturers equip devices with reception technology (including a WAP browser).
3. Qualified Internet Service Providers enable WAP browsers to receive information from the Internet.

Why do you need WAP?
For location-independent receipt of all important information. Almost the entire range of information on the Internet will gradually also be available to WAP users. Think of addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail, road maps, timetable information, ticket reservations, news, traffic reports, weather forecasts - everything else you already know aboutcan be reached via the Internet.

What do I need to wapen?
Either a modern mobile phone, a pager or a normal computer with an internet connection.
Mobile phone and pager must be equipped with a WAP browser. You can find out which devices already offer this service here .
For the computer, download a WAP browser from the Internet.

Are there any conflicts with the Internet?
No. Properly created WAP information comes with an XML definition. XML is the abbreviation for eXtended Markup Language - nothing other than the international standard for all extensions of all markup languages. The WAP markup language WML is thus an application of XML and fully compatible with it. Only such sites can be reached by WAP users via multi-search functions such as in-X or special WAP search engines.
