Gynecology

Gynecology (Greek: gyné = woman and logos = teaching), also women's medicine, is the study of the treatment of diseases of the female sexual and reproductive tract. Gynecology is a specialty of human medicine. The specialist training follows the general medical studies.

The tasks of gynecology also include the treatment of diseases of the female breast and the corresponding preventive examinations (preventive medicine; see also mammography).

Gynecology is one of the surgical specialties of medicine. Some classic procedures: hysterectomy (removal of the womb), tubal ligation (tubal ligation for sterilization), laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy (removal of ovarian cysts through a keyhole through the abdominal wall).
