Single cell thunderstorms

single cell thunderstorms are the smallest occurring thunderstorms. The service life corresponds to about 20-60 minutes.
Thermal thunderstorms are often single cells.

In the case of single-cell thunderstorms, a single thunderstorm cell is the focus.
They occur when the wind increases only slightly with altitude.
Single cell thunderstorms usually result in only weak thunderstorms.

The single-cell thunderstorm goes through these stages:

  • Growth stage:
In this state, an updraft is generated by the release of instability energy,
The first thing that occurs is a cumulus congestus. If the cloud travels in the upper sections
the actual thundercloud (cumulonimbus) is formed. No precipitation falls from the cloud because
there are no downdrafts yet, although weak tornadoes may occur on rare occasions.
  • Maturity stage:
in this state there are both updrafts and downdrafts. Due to falling
Precipitation creates a downdraft that directs the cold air from the upper layers downwards. through the
weak wind shear, the updraft and downdraft cannot separate and precipitation falls
also back into the updraft, thereby weakening it. Precipitation such as rain, sleet or
slight hail on the ground. Light tornadoes can also occur at the beginning. Often the precipitation
most intense at the beginning of the ripening phase. Most lightning strikes occur during this phase.
  • Decay or dissolution stage:
In this state there is only a downdraft, with the cell raining out. The Cululonimbus Cloud
dissolves, but the cloud cover that has traveled away can persist for a long time.
Impulse thunderstorm:
Impulse thunderstorms are a special form of single-cell thunderstorms and occur when relatively
much lability energy is present, but very little wind shear dominates.
The impulse thunderstorm has the property that it is more powerful than a normal single cell. It can
weak tornadoes, hail and downbursts (strong downdrafts that can cause gale force winds on the ground)
trigger. Isolated individual cells are rare, since several thunderstorm cells usually occur next to each other.
