Avalanche research

Avalanche research serves to assess the avalanche danger as correctly as possible. To do this, many different field tests must be undertaken. For example, trenches are dug out of the snow to analyze the different shapes of the snow crystals. In avalanche research, the researchers are provided with current meteorological data, which supports them in their work. For example, the meteorological data provide information about the type of snow, which indicates the risk of avalanches.

In order to perfect avalanche research, satellite images have also been integrated into the research since the year 2000. By comparing satellite images, one can deduce the type of snow crystals, because each type of snow reflects light differently. The satellite images are used to determine the snow density, temperature, water and air content of the snow.

The computer also plays an important role in avalanche research today, avalanches are simulated and calculated on computers. This also makes the work of the avalanche researchers easier.
