Career
Sylvester Stallone was born in New York and grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs.
His mother`s name was Jacqueline "Jackie" Stallone and his father was Frank Stallone Sr. who brought the original family name Staglione from Italy and naturalized it.
Sylvester Stallone`s brother Frank is now an actor like himself and also dabbles in singing and songwriting.
The childhood of today`s action star wasn`t exactly easy, as he suffered from facial nerve palsy from birth. Because of this, he was advised not to pursue an acting career.
During his school days he took his first steps as an actor and celebrated success as a football player with his team in the national league.
Stallon was also educated in Switzerland for a further two years before returning to the USA, where he enrolled at the University of Miami to try his hand at being an author.
He didn`t graduate because he decided shortly before to concentrate on his acting career.
After various small theater roles and films, he even appeared as the leading actor in a porn film for 200 US dollars.
This was followed by various short appearances, including in films by Woody Allen such as Bananas or Norman Jewison`s union film F.I.S.T. - A man goes his way.
In 1976, Sivester Stallone wrote a handwritten screenplay and created the character of aspiring boxer Rocky Balboa. Muhammad Ali`s world championship fights inspired him to create this boxing drama.
He offered it to many film producers, but with the condition that he play the main role himself. In the end he found someone and sold his screenplay to Irwin Winkler.
Stallone was satisfied with a small fee, in return he was allowed to play the leading role and still secured a high share of the profits.
"Rocky" became a big surprise hit in 1976 and Stallone became a world star overnight. The film garnered a total of 10 Oscar nominations, winning three for best picture, best director, and best editing.
This part was followed by five sequels, which were not quite as demanding as the original but were still box office hits.
Another commercial success was his action film Rambo in 1982 and there was no long wait for a sequel to this film either. Part 2 followed two years later and in 1988 finally the 3rd part.
Other successes brought the films "Judge Dredd", "Cliffhanger", "Demolition Man", "The Specialist" and "Tango & Cash".
In 2001 he shot "In the Eye of Fear" and "Driven".
This was followed by a series of films that were only briefly in American cinemas, "Avenging Angelo" and "Shade" not even making it into German cinemas.
For his comeback he started on the sequels to the two most successful roles Rocky and Rambo.
The plan worked when the new "Rocky" hit theaters and you could just let the audience numbers and reviews speak for themselves.
Filming for the new Rambo part only started this year in March 2007.
