Malmédy

A centuries-old tradition is revived every year at the Malmedy carnival during the three great days before Ash Wednesday. The carnival is opened on Carnival Saturday with the seizure of power by the "Trouvlê" from the mayor. The highlight is the big parade on Sunday, where more than 1,500 people dress up in the typical masks and costumes of the Walloon Carnival, such as the "Haguète", the "Long-Né", the "Longès-Brèsses", the "Long-Ramon", etc wear and have fun with the spectators.

On Carnival Monday, members of the local clubs parade through the city and stage street theater at various squares in the city. These are satirical representations called "roles" in Walloon. The small and big funny events that happened to the people of Malmedy in the past year form the material for the verses and music.
