Gothic

The Gothic is an art epoch that was dominant in Europe in the period from about 1150 to 1500. The main characteristic of the Gothic style is the pointed arch. The covering of the room with a cross vault is typical for the Gothic construction. In addition, the pillars are supported by buttresses that lead outwards. Accordingly, the construction consists of an interconnected pointed-arch skeleton. With the help of the vault and the high pillars one tries to express the striving up. As with the Romanesque style, the most common form of floor plan is the Latin cross.

The portal of the Freiburg Minster shows that German Gothic does not always present itself with pronounced opulence. In contrast, the steeply ascending tower pyramid is very complex. The windows in the Gothic style often have a long and narrow shape, with their dimensions usually consisting of circles and rods.

The plant world often served as a model for Gothic ornaments as well as for Romanticism. Constructive forms and motifs from the human and animal world were also popular. The finial was also of great importance in Gothic ornamentation, which was mostly used as a top for gables and towers.
