Stoiber, Edmund

Edmund Rüdiger Stoiber was born on September 28, 1941 in Oberaudorf in the district of Rosenheim. He grew up as the son of an office clerk from the Upper Palatinate, Edmund Georg Stoiber. He is a husband and father of three children named Dominic, Veronica and Constanze. His wife`s name is Karin Stoiber, to whom he has been married since 1968. After graduating from high school in Rosenheim in 1961, Edmund Stoiber did his military service in Bad Reichenhall. After military service, Edmund Stoiber moved to Munich to begin his studies in political science and law. He completed this in 1967 with the state examination and was a research assistant at the chair for criminal law at the University of Regensburg until he received his doctorate. The topic of his first doctorate, which he completed in 1971, was "Trespassing in the light of current problems". He also passed the second state examination in the same year with flying colors. He has been a member of the state parliament in Bavaria since 1974, he was also General Secretary of the CSU from 1978-83, 1982-88 he was head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, 1988-93 Minister of the Interior. In the same year, i.e. in May 1993, he became Prime Minister of the Free State of Bavaria. He became chairman of the CSU as successor to Theo Waigel in 1999. Edmund Stoiber is known as a no-nonsense, conservative politician, his policy for innovation and regional tradition is also seen as "politics of the middle". In 2002 he was nominated as a candidate for chancellor by his CSU party and received a large number of votes. However, it was not enough to win the election. In 2004, Stoiber was offered several offices, including the office of President of the European Commission and the office of Federal President, but he rejected both offers. Edmund Stoiber`s political career has had only a few bad periods to date, but his attitude towards the federal government under the leadership of Angela Merkel has come under heavy criticism, even from within the CSU ranks. This was followed by an argument with the Fürth District Administrator Gabriele Pauli, which was extensively reported in the media. As a result, his political reputation suffered more and more. Due to the ever-declining backing of his CSU party, Stoiber decided on September 30, 2007 to relinquish his office as head of government in Bavaria. Many saw this as the end of his active political career, but other offers from business and sport followed. Edmund Stoiber continued to make speeches with his many promises in speeches at public appearances.
