5. Crusade

5th Crusade 1228 – 1229

The Treaty of Germano meant that the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II was compelled to embark on another crusade. If he does not comply, he is threatened with expulsion from the church. Frederick moved to Akko in 1225. During the journey Friedrich fell ill and went home to recover. Pope Gregory IX, taking Frederick`s illness as a pretext, excommunicated him. Thus, Frederick was not allowed to start the Crusades without absolution. However, Friedrich made the decision to travel east. When he got there, the Templars and other orders would not support him in taking Jerusalem. Through negotiations, Frederick achieved the surrender of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth and a ten-year truce.
