Wrestling

Wrestling is already around 2000 BC. attested in Egypt. Today's Greco-Roman style is of Roman-Gallic origin, freestyle wrestling developed in England based on the ancient model.

Wrestling is a duel and strength sport with full body use without aids, which distinguishes between the styles of freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman. The opponents are divided into different weight classes. In freestyle wrestling, full-body grips are permitted, including attacks on and with the legs. In the Graeco-Roman (or Classical) style, holds are permitted from the head to the waistline, and use of the legs is prohibited. The competition takes place on a 9m diameter battlefield on a padded mat with a total diameter of 12m. The opponents try to bring the opponent down with both shoulders and hold him there for 1 second. The wrestlers wear a red or blue jersey, the fight time is 5 minutes without a break.

The referee or a panel of 3 judges will be responsible for directing the fight and evaluating the grip combinations. The winner of a fight is the one who has collected the most points at the end of the fight time or "shouldered" his opponent, i. H. put on both shoulders.

In 2005, the world association FILA introduced new regulations, according to which wrestling takes place internationally and in tournament fights in 3 rounds and in team fights in 5 rounds. The winner is the first to win 2 or 3 combat rounds. A shoulder victory still ends the combat immediately.

Wrestling has been part of the Olympic program since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, and since the 2004 Olympic Games, wrestling has also been an Olympic discipline for women (freestyle only). The official world championships have been held annually since 1950 (with the exception of the years in which the Summer Olympics take place).
