windsurfing

Windsurfing evolved from surfing. In November 1964, Newman Darby drew his Darby Sailboard, an illustrated DIY guide for his sailboard, and built several of these sailboards. In 1967 an American started with a windsurfer for the first time. In the mid-1980s, windsurfing experienced an upswing as a trend sport. Since then, a decreasing trend has been discernible.

Windsurfing is a water sport in which you stand on a surfboard and move in the water with the help of a sail. The sail is freely connected to the board.

The surfboard is a streamlined floating body with a length of between 2.0 and 3.0 m and a width of between 50 cm and 100 cm. The volume, which is responsible for the buoyancy of the board, depends on the weight and ability of the surfer between 50 and about 300 liters. For inexperienced athletes, the surfboard should have as much volume and thus buoyancy as possible in order to be particularly stable. The base of the mast on the surfboard is connected to the rig via a freely movable connection, the power joint. The rig consists of a flexible mast, a boom for holding and the sail.

Annual surfing world championships are held in the disciplines of wave, freestyle, slalom and supercross. In German-speaking countries, these competitions usually take place on Sylt or in Podersdorf. The Windsurf World Cup Sylt is the largest event of its kind that is held regularly.
