Sailing

The Prince of Wales started the first regatta, the sporting competition, in 1749. In the second half of the 19th century, several important sailing regattas were launched, such as the America's Cup in 1851 and the Kiel Week in 1882. The oldest German sailing club, the Rhe Sailing Club, was founded in 1855 in Königsberg. In 1900 the first Olympic sailing competition was held.

Sailing is the moving of a ship or boat using sails and wind. There are two very different types of sportive sailing: regatta sailing and cruising - comparable to the difference between a bicycle race and a bicycle tour. In sport sailing, the sailing boats are divided into boat classes.

regatta sailing:

Regatta sailing is a competitive sport in which a pre-arranged course is sailed by two or more boats at the same time on inland or near-shore waters. The route will be sailed several times. The winner of a regatta receives the grade 1, second place 2, third place 3, fourth place 4 etc. The winner is the boat that has the fewest points at the end of the regatta series, whereby the worst rating can be deleted.

In order to be able to evaluate the sailing ability, the boats are subject to strict restrictions (class regulations) in terms of construction and equipment, so that boats of the same level as possible sail against each other.

cruising:

Cruising is a trip, usually lasting several days, in a sailing boat from a starting point to a destination port. Such a sailing trip can be more or less athletically demanding, but it is never about competing with other boats. His fascination lies above all in the intensive experience of the surrounding nature and in the challenge of coming to terms with its forces and using them for oneself.
