Canoe racing is a water sport. A set distance is covered as quickly as possible in a canoe on straight water. In each race, up to 9 canoeists compete against each other on lanes equipped with buoys. The winner is the canoeist who crosses the finish line first with his boat. Competition courses are natural bodies of water such as rivers and lakes with low currents, artificial regatta courses are also used.
Canoe racing has been part of the Olympic Games since 1936. Canoe racing has been one of the most important medal makers for the German team since the 1992 Olympic Games. In addition to the boat and performance classes, the German Canoe Association also specifies the route lengths for official competitions in the national competition regulations.
Since 1936 the canoe flat water race has also been a discipline of the Olympic Games. Since 1938, world championships have been held in the years without the Summer Olympics. International regattas and a World Cup series are also held. The competitions are divided into performance classes. It is started in the boat types kayak (K) and Canadian (C).
