Japanese Studies deals with the study and teaching of the language and culture of Japan in the past and present.
Currently at 20 universities in the German-speaking area (Berlin FU & HU, Bochum, Bonn, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Erlangen, Frankfurt, Halle, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Trier, Tübingen, Vienna, Würzburg, Zurich) of about 40 professors teach Japanese studies.
Around 600 students begin their studies every year. Around 90 people (about 75 percent women) complete their studies with a master's degree or doctorate, recently also with a bachelor's degree (BA) and in the future also a master's degree (MA).
As is the case for other philologies, it also applies here that the graduates are not yet qualified for a specific profession after the final examination or doctorate. Participation in in-house training in companies, training in the diplomatic service, library service, etc. enables a good transition into professional life.
