Gemology

Gemology is dedicated to gemstones and their syntheses or imitations.

Minerals are called gemstones when they are distinguished by their beauty and clarity of colour, transparency, luster, hardness and high refraction. Another criterion is their frequency. The term gemstones also includes organic products such as coral, amber and pearls.

Gemology records gemstones on a mineralogical basis in the areas of origin, sites and properties and on this basis their professional identification is carried out.

Another area is the detection of artificial property changes (treatment) in gemstones for the purpose of color or clarity improvement.

Gemology does not deal with the esoteric meaning of stones, medicine and the like.
