Biology

Biology (Greek: bios = life, logos = teaching) is the science of life. It describes and examines the way of life and the organizational form of living beings.

As a science, it was probably first practiced by Aristotle (4th century BC).

Biology deals with the basic phenomena and laws of life, but also with the special characteristics of living beings, their organization and development as well as their diverse structures and processes.

The perspectives of biologists range from molecular structures to organelles, cells, cell structures, tissues and organs to complex organisms. In larger contexts, the behavior of individual organisms and their interaction with others and their environment are examined.

Biology is an extremely comprehensive science that can be divided into many disciplines. The sub-areas of biology geared towards the general public include theoretical biology, general zoology, general botany, but also physiology, biochemistry and ecology.

Recently, the terms biosciences, life sciences and life sciences have become established as a result of the smooth transitions to other scientific fields (e.g. medicine and psychology) and the often highly interdisciplinary character of research.
