In its more than hundred-year history, many musical styles have developed in jazz. Jazz can be roughly divided into the classic, from 1950 into the experimental and from 1970 into the modern era.
The different styles within this development have individual musical and aesthetic characteristics that identify them as styles of jazz. Such characteristics are, for example: improvisation, swing (not to be confused with swing), a special way of forming a tone and handling instruments, stylistic individuality of individual musicians, and a reference to tradition in previous styles of jazz history.
