history:

King Lothar III. founded the Benedictine monastery of St. Marien in 1136. In 1143 the monastery received market rights. A second city was founded parallel to the monastery, probably in 1170 this became the city of Chemnitz, which became a free imperial city in 1308. This developed into an economic center as early as the Middle Ages, particularly as a result of the privilege of bleaching obtained in the 14th century. When the spinning mill was operated mechanically from 1800, Chemnitz developed into an industrial location with great economic power. Chemnitz was referred to as "Saxon Manchester", "Ruß-Chamtz" or also as "Rußnitz".

The first steam engine was built in Julius Borchardt`s workshop in 1835, and the Royal Trade School, the forerunner of today`s Technical University, was founded a year later. In 1858, the Hartmann company developed into one of the world`s largest locomotive factories. In 1883 Chemnitz became a big city with over 100,000 inhabitants. At the end of the 19th century, for example, 80% of the world production of women`s stockings was concentrated in Chemnitz and the surrounding area. Despite the great losses in World War I, Chemnitz had more than 300,000 residents just one year after the end of the war.

In 1930, Chemnitz reached its largest population to date with over 360,000. Six years later, in 1936, four automobile brands merged to form Auto Union (precursor to AUDI AG) with the Group`s headquarters in Chemnitz. Due to its industrial position, the city suffered particularly badly during World War II. Shortly before the end of the war, 95 percent of the city center was destroyed, and the urban area had reduced by two-thirds to an area of ??six square kilometers. The reconstruction of the city center began in 1953. In that year, Chemnitz was renamed "Karl-Marx-Stadt". From 1961 onwards, the construction of the historic city structures of the Middle Ages was abandoned in favor of "industrial construction" (multi-storey blocks of flats in large panel construction).

The city center was dominated by the Karl Marx Monument created by Lew Kerbel in 1971, in addition to residential buildings in large panel construction, spacious squares and parks. In the year of reunification, a third of all industrial employees were concentrated in Karl-Marx-Stadt, half of all industrial companies in Saxony and a fifth of the GDR`s social product was generated in the city.

After reunification in 1989, Karl-Marx-Stadt was renamed Chemnitz after a citizen survey. Densification and redesign of the inner city began in the 1990s. At the end of the 1990s, important shopping centers opened in the newly emerging city center. The opening of the "Galerie Roter Turm", the "Galeria Kaufhof" and the fashion store "Peek & Cloppenburg" were major milestones in the development of the city. The construction of the new city center is not yet complete. The remodeling of several large office buildings from the GDR era began in 2005.
