Public Holidays in the United States

Holidays in the United States are mostly rooted in events of national history or societal issues, with few being religious in nature. Federal government employees and civil servants are free on federal holidays. However, schools are not generally closed on all public holidays. Public holidays are not generally non-working days. They are regulated in the employment contract between employer and employee. Retail and other private employers are not tied to these holidays either.

There are ten public holidays that have been declared public holidays by the federal government. However, the individual states have the right to declare public holidays themselves or to choose a different date for the common public holiday. However, most states decide on the date when the holiday is also celebrated in the rest of the country.

In addition, there are also holidays that are only celebrated in a certain state or region. The closure of offices and shops varies here, and whether the days are non-working days depends not only on local customs but above all on the employer.

Officially, the following rule applies in the United States: If New Year's Day, Independence Day or Christmas falls on a Sunday, then the Monday is also a public holiday. If one of these days falls on a Saturday, the day before becomes a public holiday.
