Nutrition Facts Tables

A nutritional table gives the nutritional value of food. The legislature of the Federal Republic of Germany requires that information on the calorific value and content of nutrients or nutrient components be summarized in a table and listed one below the other for all foods intended for sale to the consumer. The legal basis for this requirement is laid down in §§ 4 and 5 of the Ordinance on Nutritional Information for Foodstuffs and with the Nutritional Value Labeling Ordinance (NKV).

The nutritional value label must include a nutritional value table, information on the calorific value in kJ and kcal, the content of protein, carbohydrates, fat, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals present in significant amounts.

The calorific value and the content of nutrients or nutrient components are stated per 100 grams or 100 milliliters of the food. If additional foods are required for ready meals, the basis for the declaration can also be the ready-to-eat food. It is also permissible to indicate per portion if the quantity is specified on the label.
