The wine-growing region extends over a length of 100 km from the north to the south of Alsace - from Strasbourg to Mulhouse - with a width of 1.5 to 3 kilometers.
Grape VarietiesThe following grape varieties are permitted in Alsace: Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Muscat d'Alsace and Pinot Noir.
Climate and SoilsThe wine-growing region is climatically favorable on the east side of the Vosges. The soil is very different and, depending on the location, is made up of granite, gneiss or slate as primary rock soils and limestone, marl or sandstone as sedimentary rock soils.
Size and LocationsIn Alsace, 90% white vines are grown on an area of 15,535 hectares.
