United States

In the USA, viticulture has a very checkered history behind it. Even the settlers planted vines. But in the early 20th century, most of the vineyards were cleared in the wake of Prohibition. A new boom only started in the 1970s. Although viticulture is concentrated in California (70% of wine comes from California), there are now a few states with notable viticulture (Oregon, Washington, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Texas). With over 17 million hl, the USA is now a very important wine-growing country.
