Narrozunft Villingen 1584 eV

On June 16, 1326, Duke Albrecht of Austria entered Villingen and accepted the homage of the citizens. On this occasion, the city also received a letter of confirmation from its new master of its traditional rights and freedoms, including the right to celebrate its carnival as it had been done since the end of the tenth century.
During this period of Austrian rule, the symbolic figure of the local carnival, the "Villinger Narro", developed and this town became a foolish stronghold in the Lower Austrian lands.

The University of Freiburg was in 1584 because of the plague with the Franciscans in Villingen. The Franciscans were very fond of the carnival. The city also turned a blind eye when "the youth were mischievous and impudent when inclined to study" (Fasnacht). The custom allowed "the clergy, even monks and nuns, to make carnival, to indulge in dancing and merrymaking."
