Lucerne Carnival
The Lucerne carnival is the second largest carnival in Switzerland after the Basel carnival. It traditionally begins on Schmotzige Donnschtig, or SchmuDo for short, at 5 a.m. with the Fritschi day watch and ends on Güdis Tuesday with the Monstercorso.
The four guilds of the city of Lucerne, Fidelitas Lucernensis, the Wey guild, the saffron guild and the mask lovers' society, came together to form the Lozärner Fasnachtskomitee (LFK) in 1951. Together they stage and organize, among other things, the two carnival parades on SchmuDo and on Güdismontag (Shrove Monday).
