State
When we talk about a federal state, we are talking about a government district of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Federal Republic of Germany is divided into 16 such federal states. Each of these federal states is led by its own head of government and has a capital. The individual federal states are further subdivided into administrative districts, rural districts, municipal associations and municipalities. The Federal Republic of Germany was divided into 10 federal states in 1949. In 1957 Saarland was officially included as the 11th federal state. In 1990 the 5 remaining federal states were added, one speaks here of the new federal states, which include Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
