Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, art paintings developed on independent image carriers such as wooden panels or canvas.

Painting in the Middle Ages in Europe was almost exclusively religious. We find art painting especially as a painting of churches and monasteries as well as their altarpieces. Portraits, landscapes, and still lifes and everyday scenes came very late as art paintings in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
